Why I Carry a Gun

There comes a time in every man's life when he stops bustin' knuckles and

A new kinda Christmas, for all those we hold dear

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

" So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

PLEASE, would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many
people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our
U.S service men and women for our being able to celebrate these
festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people
stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us.

Especially this close to the giving time of year . . . it is a good idea for any college student or someone that has huddle meetings regularly.

Cemetery Escort Duty

  I just wanted to get the day over with and go down to Smokey's. Sneaking a look at my watch, I saw the time, 1655. Five minutes to go before the cemetery gates are closed for the day. Full dress was hot in the August sun. Oklahoma summertime was as bad as ever--the heat and humidity at the same level--both too high.

  I saw the car pull into the drive, '69 or '70 model Cadillac Deville, looked factory-new. It pulled into the parking lot at a snail's pace. An old woman got out so slow I thought she was paralyzed; she had a cane and a sheaf of flowers--about four or five bunches as best I could tell.
  I couldn't help myself. The thought came unwanted, and left a slightly bitter taste: 'She's going to spend an hour, and for this old soldier, my hip hurts like hell and I'm ready to get out of here right now!' But for this day, my duty was to assist anyone coming in.
  Kevin would lock the 'In' gate and if I could hurry the old biddy along, we might make it to Smokey's in time.
  I broke post attention. My hip made gritty noises when I took the first step and the pain went up a notch. I must have made a real military sight: middle-aged man with a small pot gut and half a limp, in marine full-dress uniform, which had lost its razor crease about thirty minutes after I began the watch at the cemetery.
  I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk. She looked up at me with an old woman's squint.
  'M a'am,may I assist you in any way?'
  She took long enough to answer.
  'Yes, son. Can you carry these flowers? I seem to be moving a tad slow these days.'
  'M y pleasure, ma'am.' Well, it wasn't too much of a lie.
  She looked again. 'Marine, where were you stationed?'
  ' Vietnam, ma'am. Ground-pounder. '69 to '71.'
  She looked at me closer. 'Wounded in action, I see. Well done, Marine. I'll be as quick as I can.'
  I lied a little bigger: 'No hurry, ma'am.'
  She smiled and winked at me. ' Son, I'm 85-years-old and I can tell a lie from a long way off. Let's get this done. Might be the last time I can do this. My name's Joanne Wieserman, and I've a few Marines I'd like to see one more time.'
  'Yes, ma 'am. At your service.'
  She headed for the World War I section, stopping at a stone. She picked one of the flowers out of my arm and laid it on top of the stone. She murmured something I couldn't quite make out. The name on the marble was Donald S. Davidson, USMC: France 1918.
  She turned away and made a straight line for the World War II section, stopping at one stone. I saw a tear slowly tracking its way down her cheek. She put a bunch on a stone; the name was Stephen X.Davidson, USMC, 1943.
  She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone, Stanley J. Wieserman, USMC, 1944.
  She paused for a second. 'Two more, son, and we'll be done'
  I almost didn't say anything, but, 'Yes, ma'am. Take your time.'
  She looked confused. 'Where's the Vietnam section, son? I seem to have lost my way.'
  I pointed with my chin. 'That way, ma'am.'
  'Oh!' she chuckled quietly. 'Son, me and old age ain't too friendly.'
  She headed down the walk I'd pointed at. She stopped at a couple of stones before she found the ones she wanted. She placed a bunch on Larry Wieserman, USMC, 1968, and the last on Darrel Wieserman, USMC, 1970. She stood there and murmured a few words I still couldn't make out.
  'OK, son, I'm finished. Get me back to my car and you can go home.'
  'Yes, ma'am. If I may ask, were those your kinfolk?'
  She paused.
  'Yes, Donald Davidson was my father, Stephen was my uncle, Stanley was my husband, Larry and Darrel were our sons. All killed in action, all marines.'
  She stopped. Whether she had finished, or couldn't finish, I don't know. She made her way to her car, slowly and painfully.
  I waited for a polite distance to come between us and then double-timed it over to Kevin, waiting by the car.
  'Get to the 'Out' gate quick. I have something I've got to do.'
  Kevin started to say something, but saw the look I gave him. He broke the rules to get us there down the service road. We beat her. She hadn't made it around the rotunda yet.
  'Kevin, stand at attention next to the gatepost. Follow my lead.' I humped it across the drive to the other post.
  When the Cadillac came puttering around from the hedges and began the short straight traverse to the gate, I called in my best gunny's voice: 'TehenHut! Present Haaaarms!'
  I have to hand it to Kevin; he never blinked an eye--full dress attention and a salute that would make his DI proud.
  She drove through that gate with two old worn-out soldiers giving her a send-off she deserved, for service rendered to her country, and for knowing duty, honor and sacrifice.
  I am not sure, but I think I saw a salute returned from that Cadillac.

  Instead of 'The End,' just think of 'Taps.'

As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer: 'Lord, keep our servicemen and women safe, whether they serve at home or overseas. Hold them in your loving hands and protect them as they protect us.'
Let's all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before in our thoughts. They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy.

If we ever forget that we're one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under!

The most dangerous chocolate cake recipe in the world

I had a friend e-mail me this, I wanted to share it with all of ya'll! ENJOY!!!!

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

1 Coffee Mug
4 tablespoons flour(that's plain flour, not self-rising)
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons baking cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional) some nuts (optional)
Small splash of vanilla

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well . Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes on high.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!

Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired. EAT!
(this can serve 2 if you want to share!)

And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?
Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

Never get any on dogs but these are funny!

Where were you when the towers fell? What were you doing seven years ago that you will remember for the rest of your life? For our parents generation it was "Where were you when Kennedy was shot, either of them?" for our generation, the defining question will be, "Where were you when the towers fell? Where were you when the Pentagon was hit? Where were you when those brave souls went down in that field to stop some of the madness? Where were you?"

It really is upseting that the two words that define these times are: "If only . . . . ."

Remember the ones who fell on this day, remember the ones that have fallen in the seven years since due to it's aftermath. Remember the fallen, remember the fallen always, they have died so that we may enjoy the freedoms that we do today.

This is the email that I received from R. Neagle thru a friend.

IT IS WITH GREAT REGRET THAT I WRITE TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT FANDOM HAS TAKEN A GREAT BLOW...

JOESEPH GRILLOT..JOEY...HAS PASSED AWAY.

HE WAS RECOVERING FROM A BOUT WITH PNEUMONIA IN BOTH LUNGS LAST WEEK.

HE DIED CHRISTMAS MORNING AT 4:00 A.M.

HIS HEALTH HAD BEEN DECLINING THE LAST FEW YEARS AND HE HAD BEEN FIGHTING HEART PROBLEMS AS WELL.

SERVICES ARE BEING WORKED OUT, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE FRIDAY NIGHT WILL BE THE WAKE AND THE FUNERAL WILL BE SATURDAY. I WILL LET YOU KNOW AS SOON AS HIS FAMILY FINISHES WITH THE ARRANGEMENTS.

PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERY FAN YOU KNOW AROUND THE COUNTRY. JOEY WAS KNOWN FAR AND WIDE AND I DO NOT WANT ANYONE TO NOT KNOW OF HIS PASSING.
HE WAS KNOWN AND LOVED BY MANY IN MANY PLACES.

FANDOM AS WE KNOW IT, OUR GENERATION, OWES A GREAT DEAL TO JOEY.

I remember Joey. He was a gentle guy. He and his grandson always helped out in Crecent City Con's Hospitality Suite every year that I helped run it. They were a great team. I am going to miss him tremendously.

Let this memory lessen the grief: My oldest child and I were going to see the very first Harry Potter movie and Joey was there. He looked at my child, who was bouncing on the balls of her feet she was so happy to be going to see the movie, and asked her if she liked the characters in the books. She shyly nodded. He reached in his pocket and took out a small tackpin and with a wink at me, handed it to her saying that maybe she too could be a Griffindor. It was a Griffindor house pin that he gave her. She still has it in her jewelery box six years later.

It isn't even NOON YET!!!!!!

I am having a REALLY bad day again, but there seems to be an angle looking out for me and mine today.

I went to Wal-Mart this morning to get groceries and to get wrapping paper and it's accomanyment for the stuff that my brother is sending to my house for the holiday. The little one and I got there about 10am. We did the shopping and paid for everything then headed out to the Trailblazer to go home. I get to the car and I don't have my key on my keyring. I have Sean's with the alarm fob but not mine. I call the house and ask Sean to drive up to the store and bring me the spare key. I then go back into Wal-Mart and check to see if someone had turned it in at the Customer Service desk. It wasn't there.
I was begining to think that it may have gotten kicked under my car so the little one and I went back outside to look again while waiting for Sean to get there. As I walked to the front of the car to see if it fell off there while I was getting the basket, I noticed something on the driver's seat of my car. I tried the door, it was unlocked. On the seat was a note and my car key on a brand new key hook. The note read: " I found this key on the ground and it fit your car. I bought you a new key chain so that you won't loose it again. Merry Christmas."
Well the note was written on a stationary sheet from a church around the corner from Wal-Mart. Their daily worship starts at 10am tomorrow morning. I will be going to that church tomorrow and standing infront of that congrigation and thanking them all since the note wasn't signed. If the wrong person had found my key, they could have driven off with it. Who ever returned my key is owed my thanks because I can't afford to get another one right now if something happens to the one I have.

There are angels out there, sometimes they drive cars instead of flying.

Why is it that these idiots seem to forget that once they take the oath of office, they are PUBLIC SERVANTS and that they are supposed to represent the WILL OF THE PEOPLE. Sometimes I just don't understand the idiots that are in office, sadly it isn't against the law to break your campaign promises or anthing that you promise people to get elected -- sometimes I wish that you could recall an elected official for those reasons.

My favorite series is "Crying Freeman". I own the set of six on three DVDs. It is that adaptation of Kazou Koike & Ryoichi Ikegami's manga series. It is about a . . . . this is the description from the back of the case: The talented artist, Yo Hinomura, is brainwashed into becoming an assassin in the employ of the sinister crime syndicate known as the 108 Dragons. Yet his conversion into a heartless killer is incomplete; he manages to retain some small link to his humanity, epitomized by the silent tears he sheds for his victims. Filled with bold images of uncompromising violence, lively sensuality and pulse pounding action, Crying Freeman remains the quintessential example of mature story telling told thru stylish amimation. I have seen others but this series is by far my favorite.

Paranormal:

Living in New Orleans for most of my life, up until the twin b^(&%es Katrina & Rita, I have gone on every type of tour that you could go on in the city. I have seen things that defy rational and logical explaination and have always loved the histories of the different creatures of the night (and day too for that matter). The weirder the situation, the more interesting I find it.

Music:

There really isn't any type of music (with the exception of most types of rap) that I can't stand or don't have at least one song that I find interesting to listen to.

Travel:

It is something that I have always wanted to do, and unfortuately I have not been able to indulge in at all. I have lived in Louisiana, Alabama, and South Carolina. I would like to visit the British Isles and maybe Greece or Italy or Egypt to see the ancient ruins that are there.

Movies:

I like movies from when I was younger. "Clash of the Titans" was the first movie I saw that had some REALLY cool effects. Escape to and Return from Witch Mountain were pretty cool too. I can put up with any movie except something with Adam Sandler in it or gore/horror flicks. With an overactive imagination, gore/horror flicks give me too many unsettling dreams.

Cooking:

I learned to cook at my Grandmother Meisner's knee and my Mom encouraged me to continue. I have made my own fair share of mistakes, have trouble following recipes (not because I can't read them, but because sometimes the substitutions don't work as well as the oringal ingredients did), but you can tell my looking at me, I haven't missed many meals in my life, LOL. Here is the clincher, when I got married 8 years ago (yes it has been 8 years already) the husband was in a size 30" waist. The last set of pants/jeans that I bought him were 42" waist. LOL

Card Games:

Well, this started out with Magik cards when they were the rage, back in 92. It went to Magination cards in 99. And now it is the Munchkin games, because I can play them with my daughters; usually it is a game of gang up on daddy and make him loose when the four of us sit down to play. It is a good way to get the family together without the TV and have a game night. I still play reagular cards as well and have since I was old enough to add and subtract. My fondest memories (and I bet Chris has them too) are of Grandmother Meisner and the three of us kids sitting down to play Cribbage when she would come over to Mom's house either before dinner or after dinner. GODS, I miss her.

I was told when I lost my job at the dealership that they don't pay unemployment, they fight your claim. And they did fight me for it, at least I didn't have to go before an arbritration to have it settled. I got a letter from the Unemployment commission in the mail yesterday. I won, I can now claim unemployment! I can't describe how, can't think of a good word here . . . . . give me a moment . . . . ah here it is, vindicated (that is the word that I want) that it wasn't totally MY fault that I got let go.

I am starting to get my voice back now so hopefully the crap that I have had since Labor Day is ALMOST done with me, LOL. And since my new job is answering phones, I REALLY need my voice back, LOL.

As soon as the weekends get cooler, I am going to be learning how to cast-net for shrimp and trawl for crabs to supliment the store bought food in the freezer. The kids already know how, now I need to learn, LOL. It is weird, the girls are TERRIFIED of all insects, snakes, and large dogs but will grab a handfull of live shrimp and run them down the pier, go figure.

Ah well, ya'll take care and catch ya l8r!

Okies, have GOOD news . . .

I went on an interview this morning for a receptionist job that is right around the corner from the house. It was one of the ones that I had to cancel last week because I was SO dam sick. I am still sick but getting better. The office manager said that she had to speak with her controller and she would call me back either this evening or tomorrow morning and let me know if I had the job or not.

I had a BAD time with the unemployment office interview #2 on the way home from the interview today, it really sucked BAD. When I got home, I had a monster of a headache starting and went to lay down. Around 2pm the phone rang, the first thing out of Brenda's mouth was: So when do you want to start working? YEAH!!!! I got a job, it will be at a dealership close to home but I have to train at the main store, it is way out in BFE. But after a week, I would be at the other dealership by the house.

Hours: 7:30 - 4:30, NO weekends! Benifits after 90 days with a performance review after 90 days as well. No more EOM, thank the gods!

SEAN GOT THE JOB!!!!!! Hopefully he will start imeadiately. He went on an interview for 10am it lasted until after 11:30, LOL. He called me and said that he was heading home. Twenty minutes later, he called and said that he had got the job and was turning around to go back and fill out paperwork. He called me five minutes ago and said that the boss wants to take him on a drive-a-round to introduce him to clients. He will call when he is on his way home.

After ten months of basically nothing, he gets a job. I am sitting here crying I am so happy.

Next step: Find job for ME!!!
